Improving Assertiveness Skills for Care Workers
Aim
To provide care workers with the skills and confidence to communicate more clearly, professionally, and effectively by using assertive behaviour techniques within health and social care settings.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Recognise the three main categories of behaviour — passive, aggressive, and assertive — and understand their advantages, disadvantages, and impact in the workplace
- Understand how assertive communication can support professional relationships, teamwork, confidence, and quality of care
- Develop practical assertiveness techniques to help communicate clearly, respectfully, and confidently with colleagues, managers, service users, and families
- Recognise how to express concerns, ask questions, set boundaries, and say no appropriately when necessary
- Improve confidence in handling difficult conversations and responding professionally in challenging situations
- Understand the importance of assertiveness in promoting safeguarding, dignity, accountability, and person-centred care
- Practise communication techniques that support positive working relationships and reduce conflict or misunderstandings
- Create a personal action plan to continue developing assertiveness skills and confidence in the workplace
Target Audience
This course is designed for care workers, support workers, senior carers, and other health and social care staff who wish to build confidence, improve communication skills, and take a more proactive and professional approach within the workplace.
